Overview

Dubai is a polished, easy city to visit, with excellent hotels, malls, beaches and attractions. Abu Dhabi, about 90 minutes away by road, offers grand mosques and museums, while the northern emirates have mountains and quieter coasts. Because so many flights to Asia connect here, a two- or three-night stopover is a popular way to break a long journey.

Best time to go

November to March is the most comfortable season with warm days and mild evenings. From about May to September temperatures are extremely high, so outdoor activities are best early or late in the day, though hotel prices tend to drop.

Getting there

Dubai International (DXB) is one of the world's busiest airports, with direct flights from most European capitals including Stockholm. Abu Dhabi (AUH) is the second major gateway. Some airlines allow multi-day stopovers on tickets to Asia at little or no extra fare; compare a stopover itinerary with a straight connection.

Budget tips

  • Use the Dubai Metro and buses with a rechargeable travel card instead of taxis for longer trips.
  • Visit in shoulder months (October, April) for lower hotel rates and still-pleasant weather.
  • Public beaches and the old souks are free to enjoy.
  • Book desert trips with clear inclusions (transfers, meals, activities) to compare like for like.
