How to find cheap flights: 12 tactics that actually work

Cheap flights are rarely about secret tricks. They come from being flexible where it costs you little and careful where airlines make their money. Here is the checklist we use ourselves.
1. Be flexible by a day or two
Moving your departure or return by a single day can change the fare noticeably, because airlines price each flight on its own demand. Use a search that shows a calendar or a range of dates and look at the whole week, not just the day you first had in mind.
2. Check nearby airports
Big cities often have several airports, and low-cost carriers like secondary ones. Add up the real cost, though: a cheaper fare from an airport 100 km away can disappear once you pay for the bus or train and the extra time.
3. Compare one-way tickets and mixed airlines
A return ticket is not always cheapest. Two one-way tickets on different airlines can beat it, especially within Europe. The trade-off: if the first flight is late and you miss the second, separate tickets usually do not protect you. Leave generous time between them.
4. Search widely, then book where it suits you
A metasearch engine compares many airlines and agencies at once, so you see the market in seconds. When you click through you book with the airline or agency directly. Before paying, check the agency's reviews, change rules and the final price including fees.
5. Do the baggage maths
The lowest fare often excludes a cabin bag or checked bag. Compare the total for the way you actually travel. A slightly higher fare with luggage included can be the cheaper option.
6. Set a fare alert instead of refreshing
If your trip is months away, set a price alert on your route and let the prices come to you. It saves time and stops panic buying.
7. Fly at less popular times
Early morning, late evening and midweek flights are often cheaper than Friday and Sunday afternoons, and school holidays push prices up everywhere.
8. Consider the destination as flexible too
If you just want sun or a city break, search from your home airport to "anywhere" or to a whole country and let the prices suggest the trip.
9. Don't wait for a last-minute miracle
Last-minute bargains exist, but on popular routes fares usually rise as the plane fills. If the price is good for your dates, booking is generally safer than waiting.
10. Know your rights
For flights covered by EU rules (departing from the EU, or arriving in the EU on an EU airline), long delays and cancellations can entitle you to care and compensation of up to €600, depending on distance. Keep your boarding passes and receipts.
11. Read the fare rules before you pay
Basic fares can be non-changeable and non-refundable. If your plans are uncertain, a flexible fare can be worth more than the saving.
12. Use the right tool
Start with a broad comparison. Our flight search checks hundreds of airlines and agencies in one go, and you always book directly with the provider.
Prices and availability change constantly and are set by airlines and agencies. Farefika does not sell tickets.
