Overview
India is enormous and diverse. First-timers often start with the "Golden Triangle" of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, then add Rajasthan's desert cities, the holy city of Varanasi, or a relaxing finish in Goa or Kerala. Trains connect most major cities and domestic flights cover long distances quickly. India also makes an easy combination with Nepal.
Best time to go
For most of the country, October to March is the most comfortable period, with cooler, dry weather. April to June is very hot on the plains; the monsoon arrives in the south around June and spreads north. The Himalayan regions of Ladakh and Spiti are best visited in summer.
