Overview
Japan combines very modern cities with deep traditions, all connected by one of the world's best rail networks. A first trip often follows the "golden route" from Tokyo via Hakone or Mount Fuji to Kyoto, Nara and Osaka, but the Japanese Alps, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Okinawa are all worth a look on a second visit.
Best time to go
Spring (late March to early May) brings cherry blossom and is very busy; autumn (October to November) offers colourful leaves and comfortable temperatures. Summer is hot and humid, with a rainy season in early summer on the main islands and typhoon risk later. Winter is cold and clear in Tokyo and snowy in Hokkaido and the Alps, which is great for skiing.
Top places in Japan
Tokyo
Distinct neighbourhoods from Shibuya and Shinjuku to old-style Asakusa, plus museums, gardens and endless restaurants.
Kyoto
Temples, shrines, gardens and the historic Gion district; go early in the morning to beat crowds.
Osaka and Nara
Osaka for street food and nightlife, Nara for its great temples and the deer park.
Hiroshima and Miyajima
The Peace Memorial Park and the island shrine with its famous gate in the sea.
Mount Fuji and Hakone
Lake views, hot-spring inns and, in the official climbing season, the summit trails.
Hokkaido
Wide landscapes, powder snow in winter, flower fields in summer and excellent seafood.
Getting there
Tokyo has two major airports (Narita and Haneda) and Osaka's Kansai Airport is the main western gateway. Consider an open-jaw ticket, flying into Tokyo and out of Osaka, to avoid backtracking. From Europe, compare direct flights with one-stop options via Helsinki, the Gulf or Istanbul.

Requirements depend on your passport, so check Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs before booking. Japan also offers the online Visit Japan Web service for arrival procedures.
