Overview
Sri Lanka is small enough to see a lot in two weeks. A classic loop runs from Colombo or Negombo to the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa), on to Kandy, then by the scenic train through tea country to Ella, followed by a safari and time on the south coast around Galle.
Best time to go
The west and south coasts and the hill country are usually best from about December to April. The east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is best from about May to September. That split means there is always a good region to visit.

- Hiring a car with driver for part of the trip can be good value for two or more people.
- Combine coasts by season rather than paying peak prices in the off-season region.
Before you go
- Travel insurance.
- An eSIM for mobile data from the moment you land.
- A pre-booked airport transfer for a late arrival.
- Car rental and hotel search.
