Flying from Stockholm: airports, getting there and money-saving tips

Stockholm is well connected, but the airport you choose can change both the fare and the total travel time. Here is a practical overview for travellers starting their trip in the Swedish capital.
Stockholm's airports at a glance
- Arlanda (ARN) is the main international airport, north of the city, with the widest choice of long-haul and European flights.
- Bromma (BMA) is the small city airport close to the centre, mainly for domestic and some short European routes.
- Skavsta (NYO) near Nyköping and Västerås (VST) are much further from the city and are mostly used by low-cost airlines.
When you search, use the city code STO to see flights from all Stockholm airports at once.
Getting to Arlanda
There are several options: the Arlanda Express airport train (fastest), regular commuter and regional trains, airport coaches such as Flygbussarna, and taxis. The commuter train is usually the cheapest rail option, but note that an airport access fee applies at Arlanda's stations. Compare current prices and journey times before you go, and check whether group or advance fares are available.
Is a cheaper fare from Skavsta worth it?
Sometimes. Skavsta and Västerås are well over an hour from central Stockholm by coach. Add the coach ticket and the extra time to the fare before you decide, and check that the coach timetable fits early or late flights.
Money-saving tips for trips from Sweden
- Avoid the busiest weeks: Swedish school holidays such as sportlov in February, Easter, summer (especially July) and Christmas push prices up. Travelling just before or after can save a lot.
- Compare Copenhagen too: for some long-haul routes, flying from Copenhagen can be cheaper or more direct. Remember to add train time and cost.
- Pay in the right currency: when an agency offers to charge you in SEK or the local currency, compare the total. Your card's exchange rate is often better than a dynamic conversion offered at checkout.
- Know your EU passenger rights: flights from Sweden are covered by EU rules on delays, cancellations and denied boarding.
